NRSG370 Assessment Task 2: Case Study – Oncology
Melody King, 36, Colon Cancer
Ms. Melody King presented to the Emergency department with severe Left Lower Quadrant abdominal pain, which required emergency laparoscopic surgery for removal of a ruptured appendix.
Past medical history:
- Asthma;
- Depression
Medications:
- Ventolin;
- Seretide;
Post operatively Melody developed peritonitis and was treated with antibiotics and analgesia successfully. On day 3 post -op Melody’s biopsy of the appendix tissue was returned revealing the presence of adenocarcinoma.
Melody will need to remain in hospital a few more days to have a number of further diagnostic tests, including:
- CT scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis;
- MRI of the abdomen and pelvis;
- Blood tests for tumour markers CEA, CA -125, and CA 19 -9.
