There are two parts to this assignment: a) Understanding Scientific Controversies and b) Controversy Study Outline. Part 1: Understanding Scientific & Technological Controversies Prepare: To prepare for your controversy study, you will read the introduction, conclusion, and one of the case studies in The Golem at Large: What You Should Know About Technology. This book can be found in the Ashford University Library. You will then discuss in one page the implications of the scientific controversy on society. Although this book deals solely with scientific controversies, you can choose either a scientific, medical, or technological controversy for your Final Paper. This part of the assignment is designed to help you better understand the nature of controversy studies. Read: The Golem at Large: What You Should Know About Technology. This book deals with scientific controversies, where each chapter deals with a different type of controversy and you may find it useful to browse through the chapters and see which one appeals to you. Introduction:the technological golem (pp.1-6) Conclusion: the golem goes to work (pp. 151-155) Choose ONE of the following chapters: Chapter 1: A Clean Kill?: the role of the patriot in the Gulf War (pp. 7-29) Chapter 2: The Naked Launch: assigning blame for the Challenger Explosion (pp. 30-56) Chapter 3: Crash!: nuclear fuel flasks and anti-misting kerosene of trial (pp. 57-75) Chapter 4: The world according to Gold: disputes about the origin of oil (pp. 76-92) Chapter 5: Tidings of comfort and joy: Seven Wise Men and the science of economics (pp. 93-112) Chapter 6: The science of the lambs: Chernobyl and the Cumbrian sheepfarmers (pp. 113-125) Chapter 7: ACTing UP: AIDS cures and lay expertise (pp. 126-150) Respond: After reading one of the case studies listed above, describe in one page the implications of the scientific controversy on society. Part 2: Controversy Study Outline For Part 2 of this assignment, you will give a brief synopsis of your Controversy Study and a bibliography in at least two pages. Complete the following steps: Description of Controversy: Briefly describe the nature of the scientific, medical, or technological controversy, including a summary of the two opposing beliefs, the main points of each, your initial opinion, and ethical considerations. Goal(s)/Hypothesis of the Controversy Study: Create a goal(s)/hypothesis for the Controversy Study. Consider the following questions: What is your goal for this case study? What do you want to learn or what do you hope to theorize? Will your own personal beliefs limit your ability to objectively analyze this controversy? References: On the last page create a bibliography. List five sources you will use in your controversy study, three of which must be scholarly articles from the Ashford University Library and two can be popular sources, such as newspapers, videos, and magazine articles.
