Date Case ‘Consultant Brief’ — Questions
Panera Bread Company in 2015
(p. 300) Panera Bread management has employed you as a consultant and asked you to assess the following issues.
• Assess your understanding of Panera’s overall strategy, differentiation in its competitive market. Who are Panera’s most worrying competitors? What are Panera’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats?
The case analysis accounts for 25% of your final grade – 12.5% for the oral presentation and 12.5% for the group written report.
Oral Presentation
Oral presentations consist of a 30—minute presentation followed by a 15—minute question—answer session. As indicated above, you and your team members should assume the role of consultants employed to present your analysis and recommendations to the assigned company’s senior management.
All team members are expected to make roughly equal contributions to the presentation, both the formal 30—minute presentation and the 15—minute Q&A portion.
All presentations should incorporate the use of attractive, effective PowerPoint slides. You may use some online video, but please limit this to no more than 5 minutes in total per case.
Your grade on the presentation will be based on six factors:
1. The clarity and thoroughness with which your team identifies and articulates the problems facing the company and the issues which management needs to address—12%,
2. The caliber (depth and breadth) of your team’s analysis of the company’s situation and demonstrated ability to use the concepts and tools of strategic analysis in a competent fashion—30%,
3. The breadth, depth, and practicality of your team’s recommendations, degree of detail and specificity of recommended actions, caliber of supporting arguments—20%,
4. The caliber of your PowerPoint slides—15%,
5. The degree of preparation, professionalism, energy, enthusiasm, and skills demonstrated in delivering your part of the presentation—15%,
6. Your personal contributions to your team’s answers to the questions posed by the class—how well you defend and support your team’s analysis and recommendations during the Q&A period—8%. Every team member is expected to answer at least one question.
Written Report
Two weeks after your presentation, you are required (as a group report) to provide a 10—page report outlining your analyses and recommendations. Your written report should provide specific responses to each of the questions raised in the table above.
Your grade on the written report will be based on these factors:
1. Evidence of understanding of the key problems/strategic issues in the ‘consultant brief’ questions—10%.
2. Use of appropriate analytical tools techniques, including the use of charts and tables where appropriate. You are expected to demonstrate that you can use the tools and techniques of strategic analysis presented in the chapters. Both breadth and depth of analysis will be evaluated—30%.
3. Presenting realistic, workable, well—supported recommendations for action—20%.
4. Use of effective communication skills—failure to use good grammar, spelling, and other written communication skills will result in a full one—letter grade reduction—25%.
5. Evidence of adequate preparation, pride of workmanship, and display of professional attitude and approach—15%.
