Topic:Qualitative Project
Subject:Statistics
Volume:5 Pages
Format: APA
Description
For this assignment, you will be collecting and summarizing qualitative data. You will be benchmarking two magazines by dissecting the content and layout of each of these magazines with an emphasis on categorizing qualitative data. Select two magazines from the same genre that either interest you or relate to your field of study. For example, Time and Business Week or Cooking Light and Weight Watchers.
Introduction: Part I (6 pts)
For each magazine, identify the following:
● Title of each magazine
● Why you selected the magazines that you are comparing.
● Cover price
● Page length
● Number of articles
● Number of advertisements
Categorizing Qualitative Data: Part II (2 pts)
Categorize the different types of articles from each magazine (i.e. political, health, beauty, financial, etc.). Determine the most appropriate categories for the types of articles for your magazine selection. Since you are comparing magazines of the same genre, the categories you come up with should be the same for the two magazines. If they are markedly different, rethink your choice of magazines. Make sure both magazines are attempting to achieve the same goal. List your categories for articles.
Categorize the different types of advertisements from each magazine (can be different than the article categories). Determine the most appropriate categories for the types of advertisements for your magazine selection. Since you are comparing magazines of the same genre, the categories you come up with should be the same for the two magazines. List your categories for advertisements.
Displaying Qualitative Data: Part III (16 pts)
Organize the categories using frequency tables. You should have a frequency table using your article categories. The table will include the frequency of the articles for both magazines. You should also have a frequency table using your advertisement categories. The table will include the frequency of the advertisements for both magazines. You must have at least two tables but you may have more.
Determine the type of graphical analysis you feel most effective in conveying the data (i.e. bar graphs, pie charts, multiple bar graphs, etc.). The number of graphs you will include will vary depending on which graph(s) you feel would be most effective. Make sure you include graphs that compare the two magazines articles/advertisements category frequencies (most likely a multiple bar graph). This project should include at least four graphs to help you to compare the two magazines. You may use Excel or StatCrunch for your graphs and tables. The plots and graphs must be clearly labeled.
Summarizing the Results: Part IV (12 pts)
In a report, include the following:
● The target audience (gender, age, professional, income level, etc.).
● Compare the placement of articles and advertisements. Include any other observations about the magazines in general.
● Similarities or differences between the two magazines.
● Do the similarities or differences lead you to any objective conclusions? Why or why not?
● Based on your findings for each magazine, choose the magazine that is doing a better job at providing the target audience with what they are looking for? Explain.
● Were you surprised by any of your findings? Why or why not?
General Rules (4 pts)
● Proper grammar and spelling must be used.
● Use project headings for each section of your report.
● Must use APA formatting.
