The United States is often called a “melting pot”—referencing the diversity of the population. That diversity is reflected in many different ways: gender, ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, and other ways.

Assignment Instructions

This assignment asks you to explore and explain how diversity in the workforce impacts organizational culture, the challenges created as workforce diversity increases, and the challenges in delivering culturally competent care to a diverse patient population. A major component of this assignment is to develop tactics that are necessary to ensure effective and efficient attainment of organizational objectives given a diverse workforce and a diverse patient population.

Your paper is expected to offer an assessment of the empirical findings in scholarly literature and offer insights into the managerial implications in the context of your workplace. Leaders in your workplace could use your paper to enhance their understanding and improve organizational performance.

Your assignment will be graded using the following criteria:

  • Explain the unique cultural values of diverse workforce cohorts.
    • Identify at least three (3) different workforce cultural cohorts.
    • Please choose workforce cultural cohorts that you do NOT identify as being a member of.
    • Drawing from the assigned readings and your research, briefly explain the cultural values of each.
  • Explain the unique cultural values of diverse patient cohorts.
    • Identify at least three (3) different patient cultural cohorts.
    • Please choose patient cultural cohorts that you do NOT identify as being a member of.
    • However, there may be overlap of the three workforce cohorts with the three patient cohorts.
    • Drawing from the assigned readings and your research, briefly explain the cultural values of each.
  • Apply EI and insights from literature to address team-based conflicts that may arise between cultural cohorts in the organization.
    • Identify at least three team-based conflicts that may arise between the groups within the organization, and three potential provider-patient conflicts.
    • Explain how you, as a leader, would address these conflicts.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of a culturally diverse workforce in delivering care to a diverse patient population.
    • To “evaluate” is to make value judgments about a particular subject according to a set of criteria, in order to determine its worth or significance. A further goal of evaluation may be to improve effectiveness or to inform decisions.
  • Analyze the challenges and limitations of categorizing people into such broad categories.
    • To “analyze” is to break something down into its parts and examine the parts carefully and in detail; the goal is to identify the essential elements and to learn what they do and how they relate to one another.
    • How should managers be aware of these issues when dealing with patients and employees?
  • Address all components of the assignment prompt and use the assignment description to structure text.

Additional Requirements

  • You are expected to draw meaningful content from at least three recent articles (no more than 5 years old) from scholarly research journals (peer-reviewed).
  • Note: You may use the assigned readings as part of the paper, but these readings do not count toward the three that are required.
  • The paper should be at least 8 pages (double-spaced), but no more than 12 pages in length.
  • A title page and reference are required (these are not part of the page count).
  • An abstract is not required.
  • The format should not take a question-answer approach; rather, it should use a standard narrative approach.
