Description
Element 2: Environmental materials case study report (60%) The second element of the coursework is a case study report. The case study is a new building proposed at a site in Bristol. Information regarding the case study building is included as an appendix to this brief. You are required to write a report comparing and contrasting the sustainability of two construction materials that may be used for the building. This should consider the whole lifecycle of the materials. Only minimal marks will be allocated to submissions that are purely descriptive submissions, or that do not discuss the materials in the context of the case study. You may choose any two construction materials with the following exception: If one of your construction materials is concrete, the other cannot be steel. You are not expected to undertake design calculations as part of your submission. You are expected to demonstrate the feasibility of your two selected materials for a building of this scale through precedence, by providing examples of structures, constructed from the materials, with similar functional requirements. The report should consider the whole lifecycle of the materials and include specific sections on: 1. Introduction 2. Precedence. 3. Material extraction. 4. Production and manufacture. 5. Design and construction. 6. Operation. 7. End of life. 8. Recommendation.
